How to Install SQL Server 2022 and Enter Your Product Key
To install SQL Server 2022 Standard or Enterprise with your own license, you download the free installer from Microsoft and type your product key on the Edition page of setup. The key decides which edition gets installed, so there is no separate activation step afterwards. Below are the steps with screenshots from our own Windows Server 2022 test server, and the video of the whole installation.

IMPORTANT: your product key must be for SQL Server 2022 and for the edition you want to install, Standard or Enterprise. A SQL Server 2019 or 2025 key, or a key for another edition, is not accepted by SQL Server 2022 setup.
1. Download the setup files from Microsoft
1.1 Run the SQL Server 2022 installer you downloaded from Microsoft. Its file is called SQL2022-SSEI-Eval.exe. Don't worry about the word "Eval": your product key turns it into the edition you bought.
1.2 Choose Custom. It lets you enter your product key during setup.

7. Check your edition

8. If setup doesn't accept your key
- The key is for another version: check that it's a SQL Server 2022 key. SQL Server 2019 and 2025 keys only work with their own setup.
- The key is for another edition: a Standard key installs Standard Edition and an Enterprise key installs Enterprise Edition. Check which one you bought.
- You already installed the Evaluation edition: you don't need to uninstall it. You can change it to the edition of your key with the Edition Upgrade wizard in SQL Server Installation Center, under Maintenance.
- A typing mistake: copy the key from your license page and paste it, without spaces before or after.
9. Reveal your license only when you are ready
At Licendeals, your license stays hidden until you click Get my license. Reveal it when your server is ready and you can install SQL Server right away. If a license doesn't work, tell us within 24 hours of revealing it and we will replace it right away.
10. Frequently asked questions
No. SQL Server doesn't have a separate activation step. The product key you enter on the Edition page decides the edition that setup installs.
It is the installer Microsoft offers for download. When you choose Custom and enter your product key, setup installs the edition of your key instead of the Evaluation edition.
If you bought a SQL Server license key, choose I have a SQL Server license only. The other option is for licenses that come with Software Assurance or a SQL Software Subscription.
Only if you plan to connect the server to Azure. If you don't use Azure, clear it; setup works the same way without it.
Open SQL Server Installation Center, go to Tools and run the Installed SQL Server features discovery report. The Edition column shows it.
Checked on: our Windows Server 2022 test server (October 12, 2026) and Microsoft's guide Install SQL Server using the Installation Wizard, read on 2026-10-20. Microsoft can change its installer; check it if something looks different on your screen.
