What is Windows Server 2016 Essentials?

Windows Server Essentials is the entry edition of Windows Server. Microsoft describes it as “a cloud-connected first server designed for small businesses with up to 25 users and 50 devices.” If your office is small and you want one server for your files, your user accounts and your shared printers, this is the edition built for that.

Windows Server 2016 Essentials is a good fit when:

  • your business has up to 25 users and up to 50 devices;
  • this is your first server, or you are replacing an old one in a small office;
  • you want a server edition without planning for large virtualized environments.

If you expect to grow beyond 25 users or 50 devices, look at Standard instead.

What does the Windows Server 2016 license activate?

Your key activates Windows Server 2016 Essentials, the edition named on this page, on 1 server. It does not activate other editions or other versions. You can activate all cores of the server, the language of the installation is up to you, and the license has no expiration date.

Microsoft sets the licensing rights of each edition, including its virtualization rights. Check its Windows Server licensing guidance for your setup.

Windows Server 2016 support dates

Mainstream support for Windows Server 2016 ended on January 11, 2022. Extended support ends on January 12, 2027, and Microsoft publishes security updates until that date (Microsoft Lifecycle, dates in US Pacific Time; last reviewed October 2026).

That makes Windows Server 2016 Essentials a sensible choice if you run software that is certified for 2016, if you are replacing a server on a short horizon, or if you need to match an existing 2016 environment. For a longer horizon, Windows Server 2019 Essentials receives security updates until January 9, 2029.

Do you need Remote Desktop for your team?

Remote Desktop Services client access licenses (RDS CALs) are separate products, sold in packs of 50 as User CALs or Device CALs. Do I need RDS CALs to use Remote Desktop?

RDS CALs are separate products, sold in packs of 50 as User CALs or Device CALs. Microsoft’s licensing terms say which users and devices need them: check them for your setup.

Can I reinstall Windows Server or move the license to another server?

RETAIL Licenses can’t be reused. If you later reinstall the software or the operating system, or change the server’s hardware, that activation can’t be used again, and our warranty doesn’t cover it. Your statutory rights are not affected.

  1. Download Windows Server 2016 from the Microsoft Evaluation Center: the link is in the Download tab.
  2. Install the edition you bought, with Desktop Experience. Activate it before making the server a domain controller.
  3. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands with your license key:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

Restart the server when it asks you to.

Microsoft provides Windows Server there as an evaluation version: after installing it, you convert it to the full version with the license key you bought from us. Install the same edition you bought, with Desktop Experience, and convert it before making the server a domain controller.
