Windows Server 2019 Essentials is the version to pick when a small business wants a first server with a longer support horizon than 2016 and a lower cost than a Standard license. It is a separate product from Standard and Datacenter, so choose the edition first.

What is Windows Server Essentials?

Microsoft describes Essentials as “a cloud-connected first server designed for small businesses with up to 25 users and 50 devices.” That is the whole idea of the edition: one server for a small team, with the basics you need to share files, manage users and connect to cloud services.

Windows Server 2019 Essentials or Standard?

Pick Essentials if you are within the limits above and you want the simplest route. Pick Standard if you need more than Essentials is designed for, or if you plan to grow. Pick Datacenter for highly virtualized environments.

What does the Windows Server 2019 license include?

The key activates Windows Server 2019 Essentials on 1 server and you can activate all cores. The license is multi-language and has no expiration date. It does not activate Standard, Datacenter or any other version.

Microsoft lists the features that are new in version 2019, such as Storage Migration Service and System Insights, in What’s new in Windows Server 2019. Check the feature list for your edition in Microsoft’s documentation, because some features are not available in every edition.

What does Windows Server 2019 Essentials activate?

It activates the edition named on this page, on 1 server. Other editions and versions are separate products, each with its own page.

Is Windows Server 2019 Essentials the same as Standard?

No. They are different editions with different keys. Microsoft describes Essentials as a cloud-connected first server for small businesses with up to 25 users and 50 devices, and Standard as ideal for physical or minimally virtualized environments.

How long will Windows Server 2019 get security updates?

Microsoft’s extended support for Windows Server 2019 ends on January 9, 2029. Security updates arrive until then.

Do I need RDS CALs to use Remote Desktop?

RDS CALs are separate products, sold in packs of 50 as User CALs or Device CALs. Microsoft’s licensing terms say which users and devices need them: check them for your setup.

Can I reinstall Windows Server or move the license to another server?

RETAIL Licenses can’t be reused. If you later reinstall the software or the operating system, or change the server’s hardware, that activation can’t be used again, and our warranty doesn’t cover it. Your statutory rights are not affected.

  1. Download Windows Server 2019 from the Microsoft Evaluation Center: the link is in the Download tab.
  2. Install the edition you bought, with Desktop Experience. Activate it before making the server a domain controller.
  3. Open Command Prompt as administrator and run these commands with your license key:

slmgr /ipk XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX
slmgr /ato

Restart the server when it asks you to.

Microsoft provides Windows Server there as an evaluation version: after installing it, you convert it to the full version with the license key you bought from us.
